Foundations of Special Needs Teaching

Every child has the right to quality education and disability is one of the most severe barriers they face. This course teaches you how to recognise a child with special educational needs (SEN) early and help them at school and at home. We examine various theories and methods used to teach children with problems like autism, dyslexia, ADHD and visual and hearing impairments. We also explore the UK laws that protect children’s right to education.

Children with special educational needs (SEN) have unique learning styles and require specialised teaching methods. Teachers must receive proper training and parents and educators must understand the challenges these children face at home and in the classroom. We introduce you to the different philosophies, theories, legal bases and policies of special needs education. We discuss various disabilities and lay out their causes and symptoms to help you recognise a child with special needs early. We examine the roles and responsibilities of the local Education Authority (EA), schools and parents in supporting and employing SEN methods to help students to realise their full potential and take advantage of their opportunities.
The course then walks you through the classroom teaching strategies and methods used to help children with developmental and behavioural disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other learning challenges. We explain how to build a safe and secure learning environment for kids and adults by promoting the values of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in your classroom. This teaching course helps parents, caregivers and teachers of SEN children to support them effectively.
